Facial Liposuction Scottsdale

Facial liposuction is a procedure that involves the removal of excess fat in order to sculpt and rejuvenate the face. It is commonly performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenating procedures like the face lift. Dr. Ronald Caniglia administers facial liposuction at his Scottsdale, Arizona plastic surgery practice, serving Paradise Valley and surrounding areas. If you are bothered by your double or triple chin, or too much fat in the cheeks or jowls, you could highly benefit from this treatment. If you are interested in slimming down and re-contouring the face with facial liposuction, contact our Scottsdale center today.

Candidates for Facial Liposuction

When facial liposuction is performed on its own, it is best suited for younger patients who have good skin elasticity, good muscle tone, and a strong bone structure. This procedure is not for patients with excess skin and little fat. Women’s skin tends to respond better to liposuction alone than men’s skin.

Facial Liposuction Procedure

Facial liposuction is typically performed on an outpatient basis, lasting from 30 minutes to one hour, and goes as follows:

  • Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is administered for all facial liposuction procedures. Also known as deep twilight sleep, the patient feels no discomfort during the procedure and has no recollection of the surgery. Patients are continuously monitored before, during, and after the surgery by a certified anesthesiologist.
  • Small incisions are made in the submental crease, a naturally occurring crease underneath the chin. This incision is small, measuring just one to two centimeters. At times, an additional incision can be hidden in the crease behind the earlobe.
  • Fat is suctioned through the incisions using a small, round liposuction tool called a cannula.
  • Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision and a light gauze pressure wrap is applied.

Facial Liposuction Recovery

On the day after surgery, patients generally feel fine with little to no discomfort. The gauze wrap is removed the following morning. All sutures dissolve and need not be removed. Some patients are able to return to work as early as a few days after their procedure. However, this can vary depending on the amount of bruising the patient experiences. Bruising may result for one to two weeks. Exercise and strenuous activities should not be resumed for two weeks.

Risks of Facial Liposuction

As with all types of surgery, there are potential complications associated with facial liposuction and these may include: bleeding, infection, asymmetry, and saggy skin. It is important to note that facial liposuction is more commonly performed in conjunction with facelift surgery. It is very important that you visit with a board-certified, skilled facial plastic surgeon, like Dr. Caniglia, as overly aggressive facial liposuction can lead to significant facial soft tissue deformities.
