While insecurities are practically a rite of passage for children, school can be a particularly trying place if children are uncomfortable in their bodies. Traits, such as the shape or size of their ears, can be picked on by bullies who can make a person feel self-conscious. Children as young as six can undergo a surgical procedure called otoplasty to change their ears and regain their confidence.

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear surgery, is a surgical procedure to reshape and reposition the ears to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Individuals may experience low self-esteem causing a negative psychological impact on the person. Most often large or misshapen ears are a genetic trait that is passed down from one child to the next. In some instances, however, the protrusion may be caused by an injury, possibly in sports or a motor vehicle accident, that altered the size or position of the ear.

Am I a good candidate for otoplasty?

If you are a healthy non-smoker who is unhappy with the size, shape, or position of your ears, you may be a good candidate for otoplasty. The surgery is most commonly performed on children between the ages of six and fourteen, while their ear cartilage is more flexible and easier to mold. However, the procedure can still be performed on older children and adults who seek the results of otoplasty.

During your consultation, Dr. Ronald Caniglia will evaluate the size, shape, and position of the ears in correlation to your facial structure. Dr. Caniglia can discuss any concerns you or your child may have prior to the routine cosmetic procedure.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Patients will be placed under IV sedation during the procedure. Dr. Canilgia will make small incisions hidden within the curvature of the ear. Ear cartilage is moved and reshaped to achieve the desired results. If needed, permanent sutures will be used within the incision to maintain the ear’s new position. Once the reshaping is complete, the incision site will be closed with external dissolvable sutures.

What is the recovery process like?

The head will be wrapped with a bandage to wear during the healing process. Patients and their parents should expect some minor swelling and bruising to occur as the body recovers from the surgery. Dr. Caniglia will provide you with proper aftercare instructions, any prescribed medications, and pertinent information. Patients should keep the head elevated and ears cool to allow for proper healing. In most cases, patients are able to return to school or work within one week, although full recovery may take as long as six weeks, depending on the individual.
