As the years pass, our bodies show natural signs of aging. Wrinkles and fine lines inevitably make their way to the areas around our eyes and mouths then eventually cascade across what’s left of our faces. Often times, this can occur when we’re still fairly young and our minds and energy levels do not reflect these marks of maturity. Fortunately these marks do not have to be permanent or difficult. Dr. Ronald Caniglia offers a wide array of non-surgical wrinkle treatments in Scottsdale.
What causes wrinkles and fine lines?
Wrinkles and fine lines are part of the natural aging process. Skin looses its laxity due to a decrease in collagen production while fat deposit shift and muscles weaken. Poor genetics can cause individuals to age premature. Additionally, external factors, such as smoking and exposure to sun, can cause skin to wrinkle much sooner than it would for healthier individuals who avoid these activities.
What do non-surgical wrinkle treatments do?
Two overall types of treatments are available. Dermal fillers are natural FDA-approved gel substances that create volume at the injection site. The filler works to plump the area while reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Muscle relaxants are used to relax muscle and tissue in areas where wrinkles form. These relaxants have even been used as medical treatment for conditions such as migraines.
What non-surgical options are available to me?
Dr. Caniglia offers a number of wrinkle treatment options. Botox® and Dysport® are both muscle relaxants that restrict muscle movement to soften the appearance of wrinkles. These are commonly used around the eyes, particularly in the forehead and vertical space between the eyebrows. Juvéderm®, Restylane®/Perlane®, and Voluma® are dermal fillers that decrease the appearance of lines and wrinkles by plumping the area. These are most often used around the mouth and cheeks. Some procedures require multiple visits but younger, more vibrant looking skin can be achieved after the first visit. Dr. Caniglia can determine which products are best for your desired results.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Non-surgical wrinkle treatments are quick and easy. If needed, an anesthetic cream can be used to numb the area in preparation for the injections. Treatments can take as little as five minutes, though more involved treatments may take 15 minutes or so. With muscle relaxant treatments, the small needle is injected into the specified muscle tissue to release tension and wrinkle formation. When dermal fillers are used, the filler is injected through a small needle into the specific areas that require treatment. The area is gently massaged to distribute the filler and to ensure the desired results are achieved.
What can I expect after the procedure?
Results can be visible immediately after the procedure, although with muscle relaxants they generally improve throughout a 30-day period. The procedure is very low risk and patients are able to return to their regular activities immediately. Though unusual, some minor swelling or bruising may occur, but generally does not last very long.
