About Melasma
Characterized by dark, discolored patches, melasma is a widespread skin condition that affects many individuals. It most frequently occurs on the face but can also appear on other parts of the body, such as the forearms. This condition is especially common during pregnancy, earning it the nickname “the mask of pregnancy.” Unfortunately, these dark spots don’t always fade away after pregnancy. Though particularly prevalent among pregnant women, it can affect anyone. Melasma occurs due to an excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This overproduction can be prompted by various factors, including the following:
- Hormonal Changes: Variations in hormones, such as those occurring during pregnancy, when taking birth control pills, or undergoing hormone replacement therapy, can cause melasma.
- Sun Exposure: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun triggers melanocytes, leading to increased melanin production and dark skin patches.
- Genetics: A family history of melasma can predispose individuals to this condition.
- Medications: Certain medications can heighten skin sensitivity to sunlight, increasing the risk of melasma.
- Skin Irritation: Harsh skincare products or treatments that irritate the skin can exacerbate melasma.
- Stress: High levels of stress may trigger hormonal changes that can lead to melasma.
