How the Chin Affects Your Facial Aesthetics

If you look at your profile and draw a line down from your lower lip, your chin should meet this line. In many cases, the chin falls short, resulting in a weak profile and making the nose appear more prominent. Additionally, the pre-jowl depression on either side of the chin can create the appearance of sagging cheek tissues. A properly shaped and sized chin implant can enhance the overall balance of the face. If you are unsatisfied with an insufficient chin, Caniglia Facial Plastic Surgery offers a solution. Chin implant surgery at our highly accredited, state-of-the-art outpatient facility can provide you with a beautifully contoured face.

Is Chin Implant Surgery Right for You?

Chin implant surgery can be safely performed on individuals of all ages. It is especially suited for those with deficient chin projection on profile or a significant pre-jowl depression. During your initial consultation, Dr. Caniglia will discuss your medical history, assess your facial structure, discuss your desired aesthetic results, and create a personalized treatment plan. Ideal candidates for chin implants in Scottsdale with our team include the following:

  • Patients in good overall health
  • Those with realistic expectations about the outcomes
  • Non-smokers or those willing to quit before and after the procedure
  • Individuals with fully developed facial bones (typically post-adolescence)

Chin Implant Placement Procedure

Most chin implant surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis and take between 30 minutes and an hour to complete. Dr. Alex and Ron Caniglia perform all chin implant procedures under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, also known as deep twilight sleep. This anesthesia method allows patients to be free of discomfort and have no memory of the surgery while also feeling alert and refreshed afterward. A board-certified anesthesiologist closely monitors all patients before, during, and after surgery.

Surgical Steps

Incision Locations

The incision can be placed inside the mouth or lower lip or hidden within the crease underneath the chin (submental crease). The submental crease incision is often preferred for precise placement and reduced risk of injury to the mental nerve, the key nerve which provides sensation to the lower lip area.

Implant Shape

The shape of the chin implant is determined based on individual needs. It can be conventional, extended anatomical, chin-pre-jowl, or pre-jowl.

Procedure

  • Local and intravenous sedation are administered.
  • An incision is made in the submental crease.
  • The lining overlying the chin bone is elevated, and a pocket large enough for the implant is created.
  • The permanent implant is soaked in antibiotic solution before being placed within the pocket over the chin bone.
  • The implant is secured internally with sutures, and the incision is then closed.

Recovery After the Procedure

Most patients feel very good, with little to no discomfort, the day after their chin implant procedure. The chin may feel a little stiff or numb initially, but this quickly resolves. The sutures will dissolve naturally. By about two to three months after surgery, the implant will not be palpable, and the chin should feel just like it did before the surgery. Some patients can return to work as early as a few days after surgery, while most return within seven days. Heavy strenuous activity and exercise should be postponed for two weeks.

Risks of Chin Implant Surgery

There are very few risks associated with chin implant surgery, but potential complications may include bleeding, infection, numbness, extrusion, or asymmetry.
