What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing is a type of non-invasive treatment that uses carbon dioxide lasers to precisely remove the outer layers of damaged skin. This process stimulates the body's natural healing mechanisms, encouraging the production of new collagen and revealing smoother, healthier skin beneath. It is very effective for treating fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tone.

More About Skin Rejuvenation with CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Aging skin begins to lose its elasticity, resulting in wrinkles. Photoaging of the skin produces brown spots and raised lesions called actinic keratosis. At Caniglia Facial Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale, Dr. Ronald Caniglia and Dr. Alex Caniglia offer CO2 laser resurfacing to remove damaged skin, revealing new, vibrant, and youthful-looking skin underneath. Our skin is mostly comprised of water, which absorbs the laser (light) energy, causing vaporization of the skin. Over the next seven to fourteen days, the skin heals itself to reveal all-new, smoother, and more vibrant skin.

Benefits of CO2 Laser Resurfacing

The CO2 laser targets the outer layers of the skin where damage is most visible. CO2 laser resurfacing is an effective rejuvenation treatment that offers many benefits for those looking to rejuvenate their skin. This procedure provides noticeable results, leading to long-lasting improvements in skin appearance with minimal downtime.

The benefits of CO2 laser resurfacing include the following:

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improves skin texture and tone
  • Diminishes the appearance of scars and acne marks
  • Treats pigmentation issues, such as sunspots and age spots
  • Stimulates collagen production for long-term skin health
  • Provides noticeable results with minimal downtime

Candidates for Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing can safely be performed on patients of all ages who are in good overall health. Individuals with lighter skin are generally considered slightly better candidates; however, darker-skinned patients can also undergo laser resurfacing. It is best that candidates with the following skin conditions understand that there may be a delay in healing after treatment:

  • Rosacea
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis

Types of Resurfacing Lasers

There are many different kinds of lasers on the market, including:

  • CO2 Laser: This is a top-tier laser treatment and is the most commonly used.
  • Erbium Yag Laser: Introduced shortly after the CO2 laser, this laser provides quicker healing time but is not as effective at smoothing deeper wrinkles.
  • Fractionated Lasers: These include Fraxel, Portrait, and Total FX, which are typically CO2 lasers used at a lower energy setting. They are ideal for fine lines and brown spots with minimal downtime but less effective for deeper wrinkles.

The Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure

Our laser skin resurfacing procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, with a full-face procedure taking approximately 45 minutes. Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation (twilight sleep) is recommended for treating the entire face. If only one area is being lasered, local anesthesia alone may be sufficient.

The procedure generally follows these steps:

  • After administering local and intravenous sedation, stainless steel corneal shields are placed in the eyes for protection.
  • Full-face resurfacing is performed using the UltraPulse Encore Laser.
  • At the end of the procedure, the corneal shields are removed, and Caniglia Lubricating
  • Ointment is applied to all lasered areas.
  • The patient is moved to the recovery room to rest for approximately 45 minutes before being released to return home.
  • Patients receive a post-laser skincare treatment by one of our aestheticians.

After Your Treatment Session

The pinkness from the laser resurfacing will ultimately fade, which may take a few months, depending on the patient. Patients typically should wait 10 to 14 days before applying makeup after laser skin resurfacing. For those undergoing lighter or less intense resurfacing, makeup can usually be applied after five to seven days. Patients typically can return to work after 10 to 14 days, and heavy or strenuous exercise should be postponed for at least two weeks.

Possible Risks of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Potential risks associated with laser skin resurfacing may include hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin), hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), scarring, infection, and herpetic breakout. With proper preoperative and postoperative medications and a skilled laser surgeon like Dr. Caniglia, most of these risks can be avoided.
