Why Do Moles Appear?

Moles are very common, and many people have one or more. They are clusters of pigmented cells that appear as small, dark spots on the skin. Moles can form anywhere on the body and are generally harmless. They typically form due to genetic factors, sun exposure, and hormonal changes. However, moles can sometimes become cancerous, which is why it’s important to monitor any changes in their appearance. Mole removal addresses medical and cosmetic concerns and is a common procedure. In some cases, mole removal is necessary due to concerns about cancer.

In other instances, moles are removed for cosmetic reasons, especially if they are in a visible location and affect one’s confidence. Our non-surgical methods of mole removal address the following concerns:

  • Unwanted moles for cosmetic reasons
  • Moles in visible areas affecting self-esteem
  • Raised or irregular moles
  • Pigmented moles causing concern
  • Early signs of potential skin cancer (after medical evaluation)

How Are Moles Removed?

Moles can be removed surgically, with laser or IPL treatments, for a less invasive option. Laser mole removal uses pulses of light selectively absorbed by the mole's pigment, leading to localized heating and damage. The body’s natural healing response then clears away the mole tissue. Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results, usually three to five sessions. For moles suspected of being cancerous, Mohs surgery, a precise procedure performed by a specialist, may be recommended.

Utilizing laser techniques for mole removal includes the following benefits:

  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Reduced risk of scarring compared to surgical removal
  • Precise targeting of pigmented cells
  • Quick procedure with minimal downtime
  • Improved skin appearance and texture
  • Increased confidence in your appearance
  • Effective treatment for moles in sensitive or visible areas
  • Gradual and natural removal process with the body’s healing response

The Laser Mole Removal Procedure

During your initial consultation, Dr. Alex or Dr. Ron Caniglia will assess your moles and discuss your desired results. From there, a tailored treatment plan is created to ensure the best outcome. The mole removal process includes the following steps:

Preparation

The process begins with thoroughly cleaning the area around the mole to ensure it is free from any dirt or bacteria. This is followed by applying a numbing cream or local anesthetic to the area to minimize any discomfort during the procedure. Ensuring patient comfort is a priority at Caniglia MD MediSpa.

Laser Treatment

Once the area is prepared, the doctor uses a specialized laser or IPL device to target the mole. Pulses of light are directed at the mole, which is selectively absorbed by the pigment within the mole. This light energy heats and damages the mole tissue, beginning the removal process.

Healing

After the treatment, the body’s natural healing processes take over. The damaged mole tissue will gradually be broken down and removed by the body's immune system. This process may involve some redness or minor swelling initially, which typically subsides quickly.

Follow-Up

Depending on the size, depth, and type of mole, multiple treatment sessions may be necessary to achieve complete removal. Dr. Caniglia will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and perform additional treatments if needed, ensuring optimal results.

Recovery and Results After Laser Mole Removal

Laser mole removal is less likely to leave a scar in comparison to surgical removal. Surgical procedures always leave a scar, although they can be very discreet if done well. Laser removal typically results in easier recovery, with minimal redness or swelling that subsides quickly. The mole tissue may flake off or be absorbed gradually. However, there is a chance that the mole could grow back if some tissue remains after laser treatment. Regular follow-ups may be necessary to monitor the treated area and address any concerns.
