Why Veins Become Unsightly and How Laser Vein Removal Works

Veins can become unsightly due to various factors, including genetics, age, hormonal changes, and prolonged standing or sitting. Spider veins, characterized by their small, web-like appearance, and larger varicose veins can cause discomfort and self-consciousness. Laser vein removal works by emitting strong bursts of light that target the pigment in the veins. The blood vessels of concern are targeted with light energy, causing them to heat up and break down. Gradually, the body reabsorbs these treated veins, resulting in a clearer and more even skin tone.

Candidates for Laser Vein Removal

Most skin types and colors can benefit from vein removal with laser therapy. When treating spider veins, lasers are most effective on small- and medium-sized veins, typically up to two millimeters in diameter. The laser can also be helpful as a follow-up to other therapies, such as sclerotherapy, and for treating veins that have previously been resistant to other treatments. Laser therapy is particularly appealing as it can treat a large number of red spots in a very short period of time. It is also a good alternative for patients who are opposed to needles or surgery.

Ideal vein removal candidates typically include the following individuals:

  • Those with small to medium-sized spider veins or red spots
  • Patients in good overall health
  • Individuals without a history of blood clotting disorders
  • Patients who are not pregnant or breastfeeding

Laser Vein Removal Procedure

Drs. Alex and Ron Caniglia perform laser treatments on an outpatient basis. Laser vein removal typically takes anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour to complete, depending on the size and number of treatment areas, and will proceed as follows:

  1. A local or topical anesthetic may be applied to the treatment area.
  2. The type of laser will be chosen depending on the type and size of the vein or red spot.
  3. The laser is applied to the vein or red spot, sending out strong bursts of light that do not damage the surrounding skin but cause the vein or red spot to shrink and fade.
  4. Multiple treatments are often necessary. Depending on the severity, leg veins may require two to five treatments, while red spots can typically be treated in just one to two visits.

After Your Treatment

Smaller veins and red spots may appear less visible or may have disappeared completely after treatment. Other veins, especially larger ones, may appear darker and more visible at first, but these will fade over the next two to six weeks. Changes in skin pigmentation, either darkening or lightening of the skin, can also occur but should fade within one to three months. Patients usually experience little postoperative pain, and minimal follow-up care is necessary. Normal activities can be resumed immediately, though the treatment area should be protected from sun exposure for four to six weeks after treatment.

Risks of Laser Vein Removal

Though risks are quite rare, poorly performed laser surgery can result in burns or scarring. In the hands of our expert doctors, outcomes tend to be exactly as desired. Mild swelling or redness may occur during the first few days, but these side effects typically resolve quickly.
