About the Dermaplaning Procedure

Dermaplaning is an intense exfoliation treatment, so the consultation step is important to determine if this is the best procedure to meet your desired skincare needs. The procedure is typically repeated every three to four weeks to maintain optimal results. Overdoing the procedure can cause skin irritation and increase the likelihood of peeling, so it's important to follow a recommended treatment schedule.

  1. Cleansing: Your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any surface impurities and makeup.
  2. Preparation: The aesthetician preps your skin, ensuring it is dry and taut for the treatment.
  3. Exfoliation: Using a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle, the aesthetician gently scrapes over the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hairs in small, controlled strokes while holding the skin taut. The skin is not cut in the procedure.
  4. Hydration: After exfoliation, soothing and hydrating products are applied to nourish and calm the freshly exfoliated skin.
  5. Protection: A moisturizer and sunscreen are applied to protect the newly exposed skin.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

There is usually little to no downtime associated with a dermaplaning treatment. In some cases, you may notice mild redness and peeling of your skin right after the procedure. These effects are generally short-lived and should subside within a day or two.

Dermaplaning Risks

In general, there are very few risks associated with dermaplaning, as the procedure takes place entirely on the surface of the skin. However, people with oily skin or active acne may find that the procedure can increase acne breakouts. This occurs because the removal of hair can sometimes encourage the growth of bacteria in the pores, leading to acne spots. Therefore, those with oily skin or current acne problems may not be ideal candidates for dermaplaning.
